Oxford, OH – Miami Ohio University sophomore Ryan Smith is having a good year. Smith, a tight end, had 2 catches for 34 yards against WMU last Saturday in Kalamazoo. Covered by cousin and linebacker Robert Spillane on a couple plays, both Fenwick HS “14 grads played in front of over 25 proud family members. Grandfather Johnny Lattner (Heisman trophy winner ’53) was in attendance along with his wife Peggy. It was Papa John’s 83rd birthday.
Wearing #82, the 6′ 4″ 261 pound bruiser has soft hands. Smith in 7 games this season has 13 catches for 169 yards and 3 touchdowns. His longest reception was for 32 yards and he averages 24+ yards per game.
Smith said, ” I thought the offense executed well in the first half and we played well as a team but the defense was out on the field too long in the 2nd half.” He continued, ” Coach (HC Chuck Martin) was harping all week to play hard and I think we did.”
On playing in front in of the large family contingent, Smith added ” I was excited to play in front of all my cousins, aunts, uncles, grandparents, all of them. I wanted to go out and make some plays.”
So far this season, he is making the plays for his Redhawks. The future looks very bright.
