Crystal Lake, IL- The train keeps on rolling…The MCC Scots demolished the competition this weekend at the NJCAA Region IV Sectional held Saturday and Sunday at MCC. Sophomore ace Reilly Peltier (7-2), Brett Stratinsky (HR, 3 runs), Nick Vasic (3 hits, 3 RBI & 3 stolen bases) and the rest of the team shut down Carl Sandburg 14-0 to win the championship game Sunday. That blowout followed 15-0 and 9-0 victories on Saturday.
The Scots have now won a bodacious 26 games in a row and are a galactic 46-10 overall. Head coach Jared Wacker likes what he sees. And what he sees is a team that’s just that, a t-e-a-m. It’s never hokey or less cool to have a team that just doesn’t fit well together. We see it all the time in sports and business, many good pieces but the whole puzzle just fails to work. That brings us to this Scots team. Wacker spends some time with us to explain the current phenomena called ‘Scotsmania’.
“The team concept has been very important to our team’s success this year. I can’t say I’ve had a team get along better than I have with this year’s team. I think a lot of it comes from the fact they just enjoy the game so much and competing together. We always try and stress to them that in 20 years none of these guys will remember what your batting average was or how many games you won, but they’ll remember what kind of teammate you were and how you made them feel.”, Wacker tells us Sunday.
He continues, “I think two elements that have really helped us be successful is the competitiveness of our pitching staff and how they are always trying to one up each other with a better performance. Offensively our guys are very unselfish. We’re fortunate to be very deep offensively where our top hitter in each game is usually a new guy every day. That takes a lot of pressure off a kid when he knows he doesn’t have to be the man every day. It may be Clark (Brinkman) leading off and hitting for the cycle with 7 RBI one game, or Tex (Cullen Mayhew) or (Brett) Stratinsky hitting two home runs in a game, or (Nick) Vasic and (Riley) Richarz in the 8/9 hole getting on base 6 out of 8 times to give the top of the order plenty of RBI opportunities. We haven’t had to rely on one or two guys, it’s really been a team effort all year.”
Wacker has got it really going in the right direction. Oops. I meant the team is really going in the right direction. And the train keeps on rolling…..
