McHenry, IL- Learning is important, even to old guys like me. Thanks to Nat Zunkel, McHenry HS head coach of football, I know where Aledo and Mercer County High School are located. Zunkel, in his first year at the helm of the legendary Warriors program, won the 2012-13 IHSA Class 2A title with Mercer County HS. That victory puts him in an elite group of coaches in Illinois who have brought home the hardware of winners.

We had a nice #ChitChat with Coach Z and Sr Colton Folliard. You can find the stories below. We also had Greg Williams, Sr RB, from Dundee-Crown HS participate in a Q n A. All this will get us pumped up for our #MonsterMatchUp Week 7: Chargers (1-5) play at McHenry HS (4-2) Saturday at McCracken Field in lovely McHenry at 1:00.

#WarriorTalk with Coach Nat Zunkel:

DB- “You guys are off to a good start and sit at 4-2, how did you get ‘buy in’ from your players heading into your first year with McHenry?”

NZ- “The players bought into what we are trying to achieve. Being tough and getting back to the basics was important. Upholding the tradition of Warrior football was a great motivator.”

DB- “Making the IHSA playoffs is important to any football program, how do your Warriors process its importance?”

NZ- “We look at each game on a week to week basis. Of course, we have a “Big Picture”attitude toward the playoffs, too. We play such high caliber opponents each week that it’s hard to look too far ahead. Dundee-Crown is 1-5 but easily could be 3-3 instead.”

DB- “Congratulations on your 2012-13 IHSA Class 2A championship with Mercer County. I know where that is now (MCHS is located in Aledo, near the Mississippi River, south of the Quad Cities). That is so cool to coach an IHSA champion.”

NZ- “Wow, I haven’t been congratulated on that title for a while. But thank you. It was a great experience.”

The McHenry HS Warriors have a great coach in place to return them to the glory years of not too long ago. The Fox Valley Conference is already finding that out.

Q & A with Sr RB/DB Greg Williams (#28) from Dundee-Crown High School…..

Q- “What is the feeling as you enter the final 4 games of a great career at DC?”

A- “I haven’t really thought about it as much. I’m just trying to enjoy the last few moments with my teammates and trying to cherish the last few moments. It will probably hit me during the last week, but right now I’m trying to enjoy playing football with the guys that I have become so close to. I’m really going to miss this family.”

Q- “I covered last seasons game vs Cary Grove. You guys lost but you had a fine game. The thing I remember most though was the Chargers Fans and the Pink Out Night. You guys have a great student body. Do you agree?”
A- “I definitely agree, I believe we have the best super fans in the state. Those guys go on another level. Walking around school they are all dressed up and ready for the game. Then during the game, rain or shine, those guys are ready to cheer us on and go nuts. Without a doubt the best.”

Q- “What are your future aspirations and where do you see a slightly older yet much wiser ‘Mighty Mouse’ in 5 years?”

A- “I love the game of football, so hopefully either playing at the next level or coaching. I also like the business side of sports and being a GM or a CFO, or going into a different direction as being a broadcaster like on SportsCenter or an announcer on TV. So hopefully, in 5 years I can see myself doing one of those.”
